Autumn term
WB 28.11.22
ENGLISH
This week the children have been looking at standard English, inverted commas and direct speech. They have watched a clip from Star Wars and annotated their observations; to later use in a descriptive narrative. Here they have applied those previous skills to create a very imaginative piece of writing.

MATHS
This week the children have been subtracting fractions from mixed numbers - breaking the whole and going over other areas in maths such as: division, multiplication, addition and subtraction; in preparation for their upcoming quizzes. They have also been practising their reasoning!
WB 21.11.22
ENGLISH
This week the children have been working really hard with writing an instructional text about how to build a fire safely, creating an instructional poster (such creativity in year 5!) and writing a character description about Michael, our main character in Kensuke's Kingdom.
MATHS
The children continue to demonstrate great eagerness to learn about fractions and are slowly but surely showing their new developed skills.
WB 14.11.22
ENGLISH
This week the children have written a character description of Kensuke; one of the characters from Kensuke's Kingdom. They have also written an Island log as if they were Kensuke, practising their past tense and 1st person narrative. All children have presented some lovely ideas and shown great writing skills. In addition, the children were able to follow instructions and build a fire; just like the one Michael built on the Island. The children demonstrated great listening and fire safety. MATHS
The children continue to learn about fractions. Adding and subtracting, comparing and ordering and continuously practising previous lessons learnt. They are all showing good confidence in this area and continue to show interest in learning.
Children in need
The children completed some activities for children in need and Pudsey Bear.

ENGLISH
This week the children drew an illustration of a setting based on Kensuke's Kingdom. They annotated key points and showed great listening. They also wrote a character description using strong describing words and some even showed off their artistic skills.
MATHS
This week the children focused on improper fractions, mixed fractions, and adding and subtracting. The children continue to show good math skills and are eager to practise what they have been learning.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
The children created/designed some beautiful Poppies for remembrance day. Take a look!

It's been great first week back!
ENGLISH
This week the children have come in keen to learn. They have started a new book called Kensuke's Kingdom where they have practised their inference skills to predict the events of the story, they've discussed and analysed reasons for and against a point of view and they have created suspense within writing.
All children have shown great enthusiasm with their work!
MATHS
This week the children have been learning about fractions; finding fractions equivalent to a unit fraction and finding fractions equivalent to a non-unit fraction.
*EdShed is up and running for those who wish to continue to practise their math skills and their spellings, the children should have their login details in their reading diaries. Reading diaries are also needed to be signed by an adult to show that the children have been reading at home in order for them to achieve their reading challenge reward.

What a fantastic first half term in year 5!
ENGLISH
This week the children have been learning how to create a suspense piece of writing. They have used writing techniques learnt throughout the term and have produced some intriguing material.
MATHS
This week has been all about developing multiplication and division column methods. The children also did a recap on previous lessons taught. All demonstrating great mathematical skills.

ENGLISH
This week the children have been reinforcing their learning of figurative language; similes, metaphors and personification. They have planned and written a shape poem of their choice in relation to our Space Topic.
There has been lovely writing all round!
MATHS
This week the children have been learning about multiples, factors, prime numbers and multiplying by 10, 100, 1000. All have shown great confidence and enjoyment with their learning. Some have even enjoyed additional challenges put their way!
WB 3.10.22
ENGLISH
This week's focus has been on figurative language and creating a personification narrative about the moon. The children have shown great enthusiasm with their learning and have created some lovely writing. Cedar class even took their learning outside to enjoy the sunshine whilst working really hard.
MATHS
This week the children have been introduced to common multiples and factors. They have been recapping on their times tables and have all shown great effort in their math groups.

4th week in Year 5!
ENGLISH
This week has been focusing on the life of Katherine Johnson, another character from our book 'Hidden Figures'. The children have researched about Mrs Johnson's life, they have planned and written a biography with all information gathered. Some spectacular writing has been presented! All children have worked extremely hard.
MATHS
As always, the children have been trying really hard in Maths. This week they focused on subtracting whole numbers with more than 4 digits, estimation & approximation, and addition and subtraction word problems.
It's lovely to see their confidence grow week by week in all areas!

A busy week all round!
ENGLISH
This week the children have identified the features of a diary entry and planned & written a diary entry on behalf of Mary Jackson and/or the judge. In addition, they have completed a reading comprehension on the life of Katherine Johnson.
MATHS
The children have been working very hard in Maths. They have been looking at negative numbers and adding more than 4 digits together.
SPORTS DAY
We would like to thank everyone who came to our sports day. It was an absolute delight being able to share with you such an eventful morning. Thank you!

Another great week in Year 5!
ENGLISH
This week the children were introduced to the story 'Hidden Figures'. They have used prediction, planned and written a persuasive letter and completed a reading comprehension. All have shown great enthusiasm toward to topic!
MATHS
This week the children have practised their Roman numerals, ordered and compared numbers to 100,000 and looked at numbers to 1 million.
Queen Elizabeth II
In remembrance of the Queen, the children have shared some lovely words and designed some pictures in her honour. Showing great empathy and compassion.

It has been a great first week back for our new Year 5s! They have been amazing!
ENGLISH
This week the children have been learning about NACA & NASA by investigating what both stand for and what different jobs there are within the agency. The children have developed their own questions for any additional information needed and they have created their own job adverts for available positions within NASA.
MATHS
This week the children have been practising place value, roman numerals and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 & 1000.
